Launch of China’s First 3,000 DWT CCS-Class Methanol-Electric Container Ship: A New Benchmark for Greater Bay Area Green Shipping

Guangdong — Amid bursting fireworks and fluttering ribbons at Qingyuan Chenglong Shipyard, the 3,000 DWT (120 TEU) vessel Zhongxin 301, invested and developed by Shenzhen Zhongxin New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Zhongxin New Energy), was successfully launched.

August 1, 2026, Qingyuan, Guangdong — Amid bursting fireworks and fluttering ribbons at Qingyuan Chenglong Shipyard, the 3,000 DWT (120 TEU) vessel Zhongxin 301, invested and developed by Shenzhen Zhongxin New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Zhongxin New Energy), was successfully launched.
 
The ship is not only Shenzhen’s first electric container ship, but also South China’s first methanol range-extended electric container ship, forming a highly valuable demonstration model for the zero-carbon transition of inland waterway shipping.
 
Government and Industry Stakeholders Gather to Build a Green Shipping Ecosystem
The launch ceremony demonstrated robust cohesion within the Greater Bay Area’s green ship industrial chain. Representatives from administrative and regulatory authorities including Qianhai Administration Bureau, transportation authorities of Guangdong and Shenzhen, and China Classification Society (CCS) Guangzhou Branch attended the event and provided professional guidance. Transport end-users such as Qianchao Mining, alongside technology partners including Changhang Electric Motor, Wuhan University of Technology and Suzhou Zhibang, witnessed the milestone together.
 
The in-depth integration of policies, classification certification, market demand, capital and technology signals that new energy vessels in the Greater Bay Area have entered a new phase featuring verifiable technology and replicable commercial models.
 
 
Synergy Between Capital and Hard Technology Forms an Efficient Industrial Closed Loop
The project marks profound collaboration between new energy leaders and hard-tech enterprises. Sunwoda has nearly 30 years of experience in lithium batteries and ranks first globally in HEV installation volume this year. Its energy scheduling solutions, self-developed battery cells and BMS have undergone rigorous verification on millions of land vehicles.
Drawing on these strengths, Zhongxin New Energy, Sunwoda’s core strategic platform for shipping sector expansion, has delivered the vessel to launch. Adopting an innovative integrated ship-power solution, the vessel deeply combines high-rate marine batteries and green methanol generator sets, balancing the zero-carbon merits of pure electric propulsion and the long-range capability of methanol power.
 
Under this framework, Zhonghe Qingneng, as a solid strategic implementation partner, efficiently delivered a full industrial closed loop covering R&D of the vessel’s three-electric power system through to ship construction.
 
Live Operation of Three-Electric System: Authoritative Supervision Reinforces Safety Benchmarks and Breaks Tradition
the ceremony featured a live powertrain operation demonstration. Zhonghe Qingneng operated the complete power matrix on-site under power supply, drawing wide acclaim for its robust performance.
 
Furthermore, Zhonghe Qingneng carries out in-depth industry-university-research cooperation with Wuhan University of Technology on the marine microgrid Energy Management System (EMS). The partnership enables multi-mode optimized control of methanol power and battery power during navigation, maximizing the vessel’s economic efficiency and operational safety under complex operating conditions on the Xijiang River.
 
As a major breakthrough for mainstream vessel types operating on the Xijiang River, the project received professional guidance and strict supervision from CCS Guangzhou Branch throughout key phases including equipment type approval, general arrangement design and explosion hazard zoning for ventilation masts, ensuring top-tier compliance standards.
 
Paving the Way for Standardized Low-Carbon Upgrading
Following the launch, Zhongxin 301 will undergo two months of outfitting and sea trials. A grand maiden voyage ceremony is scheduled for October this year at Dachanwan Port, Shenzhen.
In the future, this proven commercial and technical model will deliver a scalable, standardized pathway for low-carbon upgrading of inland and coastal shipping across the Greater Bay Area.
